INTRODUCCIÓN

Esta bibliografía ha sido preparada principalmente para el uso de aquellos investigadores de las ciencias marinas interesados en el Golfo de California. Para los propósitos de este trabajo, la región del Golfo de California se ha definido como el área a partir de una línea de Cabo San Lucas a Cabo Corrientes, hacia el este hasta la costa, y hacia el norte hasta la cabecera del Golfo. En esta bibliografía hemos intentado cubrir todas las características del medio ambiente natural del Golfo, incluyendo a esas características en las que la actividad humana influye directamente, aunque no hemos cubierto la actividad humana en sí. Así que mientras los arqueólogos tal vez puedan utilizar este libro, los antropólogos culturales, sociólogos, economistas, historiadores, etc., podrían considerarlo de interés marginal. Las varias referencias que tratan de actividades del humano, como las pesquerías, deben su inclusión en este libro a la relación que estas actividades tienen con el medio ambiente natural. Se ha realizado un esfuerzo especial para incluir a referencias sobre expediciones de interés científico, por la misma razón.

La mayoría de las referencias tratan directamente acerca del Golfo de California. Si bien se podrá encontrar muchas referencias que parecen no tener nada que ver con el tema, éstas en realidad contienen alguna información sobre el Golfo. Por ejemplo, algunas describen distribuciones de especies con énfasis en otras regiones, pero también incluyen al Golfo como parte del hábitat. Estas clases de referencias han sido incluidas para dar al investigador la información necesaria para relacionar el Golfo con el Océano Pacífico. Las referencias sobre geología incluyen algunas sobre la geología de la tierra que rodea el Golfo, la cual también es importante para conocer los procesos geológicos en el Golfo. Sin embargo, no van incluidas todas las referencias acerca de las islas del Golfo, en particular aquellas que hablan de la flora y fauna terrestres de estas islas.

Este libro está dividido en cinco partes. La bibliografía, en orden alfabético y enumerado consecutivamente, constituye la primera parte. La sección que sigue es el apéndice. Puesto que la recopilación de más de 4 000 referencias en orden alfabético es un trabajo extenso, las adquisiciones más recientes las hemos tenido que reunir en un apéndice que continúa la secuencia de la enumeración en la bibliografía pero comienza de nuevo con el alfabeto. La tercera parte es el índice, que se ha construido de una manera especial, y todos aquellos quienes lo quieran usar quedan advertidos de que deben leer la introducción del índice para poder comprender mejor cómo fue construido y cómo se puede usar de la manera más eficaz. El índice incluye a todas aquellas referencias de la parte principal del libro, junto con las del apéndice. La cuarta parte es una lista de abreviaturas de las publicaciones periódicas y de serie encontradas entre las referencias, con los títulos completos de las publicaciones. Esta lista ha sido incluida porque los títulos completos no resultan siempre obvios con tan sólo mirar las abreviaturas. Dicha lista será útil para obtener material prestado de otras bibliotecas. La quinta y última parte es una lista de bibliotecas en las que la mayoría de las referencias pueden ser localizadas. Esta información ayudará a los investigadores que no están relacionados con una biblioteca grande, a conocer dónde pueden encontrar la materia que precisan para su investigación. Las bibliotecas que se han utilizado están indicadas por una clave al final de la mayor parte de las referencias, y también se incluye una lista de estas claves con los nombres completos de las bibliotecas. Por lo general, estas bibliotecas están ubicadas en áreas donde se está realizando activamente investigaciones del Golfo, como en el Distrito Federal, Mazatlán, y Ensenada, en México, y en San Diego, California, y en Tucson, Arizona, en los E. U. A. Es posible que estas bibliotecas hayan obtenido material que no aparece en estas páginas como parte de sus colecciones, puesto que la adquisición de material sobre el Golfo es una actividad continua. Ciertas de las bibliotecas mencionadas están haciendo un esfuerzo concentrado para obtener tanto material sobre el Golfo cuanto sea factible.

En el proceso de esta recopilación se han utilizado las bibliografías regionales y especializadas existentes en inglés y en español, y creemos haber incluido aquellos trabajos referentes a las ciencias marinas de la manera más completa dentro de esta bibliografía. Una lista completa de fuentes bibliográficas pertinentes aparece en el índice.

En un trabajo de este tipo, con una corriente casi continua de publicaciones, siempre resulta difícil decidir cuándo clausurar el trabajo. Las publicaciones más recientes son frecuentemente las más útiles; sin embargo es menos probable que éstas hayan sido descubiertas a tiempo para incluirlas en la bibliografía. Por lo tanto, hemos fijado el final del año 1981 como el límite para las publicaciones, y hemos hecho todo lo posible para incluir toda la información publicada durante aquel año, pero el lector queda advertido de que algunas referencias inevitablemente quedaron excluidas por no haberlas encontrado, en particular aquéllas publicadas a partir de junio de 1981.

INTRODUCTION

This Bibliography has been prepared principally for the use of marine scientists interested in the Gulf of California. The region defined as the Gulf of California in this work is from a line starting at Cape San Lucas to Cape Corrientes, eastward to the coast and northward to the head of the Gulf. We have attempted to cover all features of the natural environment of the Gulf, including features directly influenced by human activity, but we have not attempted to include coverage of human activity per se. Thus, while archaeologists may find this book useful, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, economists, historians, etc., may find it of marginal interest. The many references pertaining to human activities, such as fisheries, owe their inclusion to relationship to the natural environment; special effort has been made to include references about expeditions of scientific import for the same reason.

Most of the references relate directly to the Gulf, although there will be numerous references that seem unrelated, but actually use Gulf material. Some describe species distributions of primarily other regions, but also list the Gulf as part of their habitat. These types of references are included to give the researcher the information necessary to relate the Gulf to the Pacific Ocean. The geological references include some of the surrounding land geology that is important to understanding the geological processes in the Gulf. Not all the references to the Gulf islands are included, particularly those of the non marine oriented flora and fauna which inhabit these islands.

This book is composed of five parts. The Bibliography is first and is in alphabetical order and numbered sequentially. The next section is the Addenda. Because the serial listing of over 4 000 items in alphabetical order is a massive job, late acquisitions have had to be listed in an Addenda which continues the numerical sequence, but begins a new alphabetical order. The third section is the Index. It is a specially constructed index, and all users are strongly advised to read the foreword to the index in order to understand best how it is constructed and how it may be used most effectively. The Index includes all items from both the main body of the book and the Addenda. The fourth part is a list of the serial or periodical abbreviations found in the references and the full titles of the serial or periodical. This list has been included because the full title is not always readily apparent from the abbreviation. The list should be helpful in obtaining interlibrary loan material. The fifth and last part is a list of libraries where most of the references can be located. The inclusion of this information is to help researchers not associated with a large library to know where they may find the research material. The libraries used are coded at the end of most references, and a list of these codes with the library's full name is given. The libraries used are in some of the locations where active Gulf research is being conducted, such as Mexico City, Mazatlan, Ensenada, San Diego and Tucson. These libraries may now have obtained material not shown as being in their collection, since they are continually obtaining material on the Gulf. Several of the libraries listed are making an effort to obtain as much material as is feasible concerning the Gulf of California.

Full use has been made of existing regional and specialized bibliographies in both Spanish and English, and we believe that the coverage of these works as related to the marine sciences is complete within this bibliography. A complete listing of pertinent bibliographic sources appears in the Index.

It is always difficult in a work of this type to decide on the particular point in the continuing stream of publications at which to stop. The most recent publications are frequently most useful, yet least likely to be discovered in time for inclusion. We have set our end point as the end of year 1981 and have done our best to include all materials published during that year, but the reader is cautioned that some references will inevitably have been missed, particularly those published since mid 1981.
